Putney Pies | Traditional Pies With A Side Of Techno
On entering Putney Pies, you’d think it was an old fashioned, run-of-the-mill British pie shop.
If anyone remembers what they were like.
The unmistakable buttery waft of pastry that hits you upon entering the sleeve-like dining room evokes warming memories of your Nan’s house. The wooden features are charming, the atmosphere pub-like. So far, so standard.
But go downstairs and things start to change rather quickly.
Underneath Nan’s house is The Vault: a cavernous room in the arch of Putney bridge, under the road, with long sharing tables, that feels like something out of Lord of the Rings.
On a Friday and Saturday nights at 10pm The Vault transforms from Isengard to Ibiza as a DJ suddenly gets up and starts spinning tunes. People begin to rise in excitement and begin to dance the night away. Not so run-of-the-mill after all.
If you don’t fancy grooving with a belly full of mash, the food at Putney Pies will still get you dancing. Every pie is made from scratch, using locally sourced ingredients, every day. To accompany traditional fare such as chicken, Portobello mushroom and leek pie or steak and ale pie (all served with mash or chips) are some more inventive savouries like mini beef wellingtons or a beef bourguignon pie (Of course we want our favourite stew covered in pastry).
A good selection of bottled beers completes the British look (gluten free options sorted) as well as a succinct wine list and small collection of cocktails which you’re going to want to drink downstairs.
With the DJ…
…and a pie.
