First there was Ellory.
The there was Leroy.
Now there’s Royale.
Sooner or later, the team behind these three excellent restaurants – the former two of which both won Michelin Stars – are going to run out of anagrams for their new places.
(O’Leary is available guys, if you’re reading this).
But while Leroy is their current, Star-chasing fine dining establishment, Royale has no such aspirations. Born during the lockdown, its purpose is as much comfort as it is food, serving up a menu of good ol’ roast chicken inside a distillery.
That distillery is the East London Liquor Company, which serves as an excellent cocktail bar to boot. Royale is kept in a festoon-lit side building, with plenty of space outside for alfresco dining. Head inside, and you’ll find a narrow sleeve of a space with a huge blackboard at one end showing off the day’s menu.
That menu obviously revolves around the chicken (corn-fed Anjou chicken, no less), which is stuffed with Provençal-style herbs, and slow-roasted on a vintage Rotisol rotisserie. It’s succulent, hearty, and everything a roast chicken should be. But it doesn’t come alone, oh no. You’ll likely end up with dripping-roasted potatoes piling into the plate too, all helped by a beautiful drift of aoli. Then there are the sides, with range from the creamy ‘panisse’ chickpea fries, to the bracing chicory & mandarin salad, tempered with whipped ricotta and fried almonds.
For dessert, you can’t do much better than their hazelnut parfait, which comes freckled with boozy cherries, and of course the alcohol is absolutely first-rate, given as the wine comes from the Michelin Starred Leroy, and the beer & cocktails come from the excellent bar at the East London Liquor Company.
Basically, you’ll get the Royale treatment.
NOTE: Royale is open now. You can find out more and make a booking at their website right HERE.
