Sam’s Riverside

Sam’s Riverside | Smart Hammersmith Brasserie

Sam Harrison is a proud West Londoner.

At a time when the city’s other restaurateurs are collectively wetting themselves over the prospect of opening a place off a Dalston alleyway, he’s more than happy to open up plush neighbourhood brasseries in Chiswick and Balham. And now, he’s settled in Hammersmith. By the river.

The space he’s moved into is Riverside Studios, a new multi-multi-million pound development which looks down onto Hammersmith Bridge (it’s particularly nice when it’s lit up at night) and is only a five minute stroll along the bank to the iconic River Cafe itself.

The bluntly modern look of the development is contrasted quite strikingly with the more elegant interior – it’s light, specious, and flooded with daylight thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. In the evening, the marble tables & C-shaped booth seating is all illuminated by tiered-glass chandeliers that dangle above you like upside-down wedding cakes.

On the menu, there’s an appropriate and ever-so-slight lean towards seafood that still leaves you with plenty of other stuff to choose from. The parmesan churros are a particularly nice way to start a meal (and give you a delightful “why has no-one thought of this before?” Moment as you bite into them). Then there are other small-style dishes, including oysters, crab toasts, and diamonds of raw Cornish mackerel dressed in cucumber, lemon, and dill.

The main courses include the thoroughly British likes of roast red leg partridge with chestnuts; or a peppered venison chop with sprout tops. The grill, meanwhile, is scorching butterflied sardines bathed in marjoram & chilli; and pork shoulder steaks with a zesty chimichurri.

The long marble bar is on hand should you fancy a negroni (or any number of quite inventive cocktails), and there’s a list of wines hand-picked by Harrison himself.

It’s some of the finest in the Western (London) world.

NOTE: Sam’s Riverside is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (lunch only on Sundays). You can find out more, and book a table at their website right HERE.
