There aren’t many by-the-slice pizza joints in London, mainly because a single slice of pizza doesn’t seem like a huge amount of food.
At least, until you see the slices.
Because at Slice Club they pull them from gigantic 18-inch pizzas which, for context, are larger than two standard-size Pizza Express pizzas put together. (A calculation that is appropriately carried out with our old friend Pi). Yes, these are New York-style dough discs, made with a deeply American disregard for moderation and an unfettered joy in flavour and taste. And what’s more, it means you can carb-load in increments, and try several different toppings.
The space itself is up in Hackney Wick, a hop & a skip from the river and the Olympic Park beyond. It’s big, airy, and flooded with light thanks to the floor-to-ceilings that line the front of the space. It feels like it’s half pizzeria, half bar, with a table football table and a whole ton of screens for big matches, races, etc.
The pizzas are all New York-style, with a thin and supple crust, designed so that you can fold your slice in an aerodynamic curve, ready to take flight into your mouth. On the menu, there’s a fairly well curated collection of ever-changing pizzas, that range from the classics (pepperoni, marg, BBQ chicken) to the house specials like a chorizo, ‘nduja & pancetta-topped Slaughterhouse, and a number with broccoli and fennel sausage called the Pork & Greens. They even have a quartet of vegan pizzas too, including one covered in garlic mushrooms, and the veg-loaded Vegan Supreme.
That’s the pizzeria half of the operation. The bar half of the operation involves all manner of pub quizzes, pizza parties, pint & a slice offers, DJ sets, and more. And if you think that sounds fun…
