South Place | Moorgate Bar, Restaurant and Hotel
Some say that rhinoceros are just fat unicorns.
And they’re right.
These same people would also be right to say that new British diner 3 South Place – irrespective of the polished black marble and slick façade of the D&D hotel that envelops it – has genuinely created a menu you can enjoy all day.
Smoked cobb chicken salad; devilled bone marrow; hot salt beef sandwiches; deep fried day-boat cod with triple-cooked chips; lobster mac; truffle and goats cheese risotto; hotdogs; free-range bacon chop; baked cheesecake; Jubilee strawberry and pistachio mess; raspberry ripple arctic roll – it’s all good.
Despite the hotel’s proximity to Shoreditch (only a 10 minute walk) this is a place for the City boys and girls. Because – honestly – you’re more likely to find a Goldman MD wearing Buddy Holly glasses, skinny jeans and writing poetry on a Macbook in Hoxton than you are to find a hipster in here.
“A wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn”
– Tibetan Proverb
But it’s cool.
Not in a beardy, exposed brickwork kind of way. But in a rooftop bar (there’s a rooftop bar); private Mad Men-style games room (there’s a private Mad Men-style games room); DJ’d, late-night cocktail bar (next to the restaurant); intimate pre-dinner date spot of a garden bar (they have one); Conran-designed, pop art kind of way.
And everyone loves a bit of pop art…
… almost as much as arctic roll.
