Sushi Kyu

Sushi Kyu has just 10 seats.

They’re lined up along the L-shaped wooden counter of this intimate omakase spot, sitting on Soho’s Brewer Street. Behind that counter are a pair of chefs busily slicing, scorching, and assembling sushi – there are no distractions, no unnecessary flourishes, just a quiet, deliberate focus on the food.

It’s the sister spot to the considerably more glitzy Cubé in Mayfair, and all of the chefs train under head Chef Mogi there before they can man the frontline at Kyu. And what they offer, first & foremost, is a simple omakase experience, although you can order a la carte if you fancy.

What does that mean? Well, you’ll get a starter (such as seared salmon with shiso leaf) followed by eight hand-picked sushi nigiri. As is the nature of omakase, you never know what exactly you’ll get on the night (the Cornish dayboat fishermen they have on contract will simply send what’s fresh), but you can be sure that you’ll always get a beautiful triptych of tuna cuts, working from a mineral-rich lean tuna, the buttery medium fatty tuna, and the melt-in-your-mouth fatty belly tuna.

The aesthetic matches the food – minimal, elegant, and deeply considered. Pale wood dominates the space, with rattan-seated stools lined up in a row, facing the sushi counter like an audience before a stage. The soft lighting, bonsai centerpiece, and subtly branded wall create a sense of calm, a welcome contrast to the chaos of Soho just outside.

Drinks are equally restrained but well-curated, with a focus on sake that pairs nicely with the sushi. At Sushi Kyu, the experience is as much about restraint as it is about indulgence. You won’t find elaborate rolls or unnecessary embellishments – just impeccably prepared sushi, served in a space that invites you to slow down and savour every bite.

And with 10 seats, reservations are definitely a good idea.

NOTE: Sushi Kyu is open now for lunch and dinner, seven days a week. You can find out more and make a booking at the Sushi Kyu website.
