Your guides: Aytun Mehdiyeva and Zumrud Mammadova, who founded The Dayrooms Café as an offshoot to their eponymous boutique showcasing Aussie designers. Inspired by the café culture of Melbourne, the café allows them to continue sharing their love of Oz… but in edible form. The result is a pint-sized, pastel-slicked café tucked into a row of shops just off Portobello Road.
Inside, checkered blue floor tiles are hemmed in by dusky pink walls, adorned by antique botanical drawings on one side and a rack of indie mags on the other. Stopping short of hanging everything upside down, it’s as authentic an Australian spot you could hope to find in Notting Hill.
If you manage to grab a table, you can anticipate an onslaught of Aussie brunch classics – breakfast bowls packed with fritters and fresh veg; smashed avo on toast; truffle hollandaise eggs royale packed into a warm croissant; strawberries & cream hotcakes dusted with shards of matcha meringue. After 12pm, a couple of lunch dishes stick their noses in, from braised artichoke pasta to lamb burger with caramelised pineapple.
Accompanying all this is an equally lengthy drinks menu, comprising fresh smoothies and milkshakes, Ozone coffee, and a kaleidoscopic selection of lattes (points to anyone who can determine what goes in the blue one). Those Ozone beans also get ground into a stellar espresso martini.
