The Gate St. John’s Wood

There are some great vegetarian restaurants in London.

But this place sets itself apart – right out the gate.

When The Gate first opened in Hammersmith in 1989, it was one of very few vegetarian restaurants in London. Since then, it’s built up a huge following – and a mini restaurant empire, with branches in Marylebone, Clerkenwell and now, St. John’s Wood.

You’ll find that last one tucked down a side street in the village, parked on the corner with huge, almost floor-to-ceiling windows on every inch of wall. The interiors have a refreshingly modern, Scandinavian feel to them, with lots of pale woods, greenery and natural daylight. By night, the brass wall sconces cast a warm glow over diners, and the room is filled with a nice, gentle buzz.

The relaxed atmosphere might lull some into expecting a similar approach to the food. You, however, will be fully prepared for the exquisitely presented dishes coming your way. Haute cuisine flourishes abound here, as do elaborate constructions that seem to defy the laws of physics. There’s the avocado and beetroot ‘tartare’, surrounded by a moat of tiny capers and cider vinaigrette, or the sweet potato-filled tortillas, upended in a pool of smoky chipotle purée, sprigs of pea shoots balancing vertiginously on top. Each dish strikes a fine balance between the familiar and the inventive, and the result is a thoroughly dependable, globe-trotting menu that has plenty to please vegans, vegetarians, and any carnivores taking a night off.

The desserts – which, miraculously, they’ve also made meat-free – mean business. There’s a thick slab of Bailey’s cheesecake with a fine, crumbly base, or honey & thyme pudding, served with caramel sauce and honeycomb ice cream. And on weekends, a fleet of brunch dishes join the menu, spanning from banana & berry pancakes to a punchy chilli shakshuka.

Add to all that a list of classic cocktails, beers, and ciders…

…and there’s no way you’ll feel on the fence about this place.

NOTE: The Gate is open for dinner daily, plus lunch Wed-Sun and weekend brunch. You can find out more, and book a table, HERE.
