The Laughing Gravy | Southwark Restaurant

Now, we’re not ones to rock the gravy boat, but we have to come out and say it.
Southwark’s Laughing Gravy is a destination for anyone in pursuit of ‘the perfect roast’.
Headed up by Michael Facey – who has manned the pans under the likes of Mark Hix, John Torode of the Conran Group and Gary Hollihead of the Corinthia Hotels – this place is almost the best kept secret south of the river.
Housed in an old foundry, the interiors follow the general formula of all good Modern British brasseries – exposed brick walls, distressed wood tables and low-hanging industrial lighting – with the addition of some lofty, vaulted skylights and an upright piano. It all keeps the focus on –
THE FOOD: The smoked scallop and crayfish Scotch egg with carrot and bergamot purée is one showstopper of a starter, with fresh herbs and veg likely to be picked from the community garden next door. Equally as impressive is the confit shoulder and best bit of lamb with parsnip, black quinoa and freekeh if you really want to get your freak on for a main.
THE DRINKS: ‘Laughing Gravy’ was an old Prohibition era byword for booze – and this place is just as serious about quenching your thirst as it is about staving off your hunger. So we’ve got to give a shout out to their Mai Thyme (see what they did there?) and their Cherry Bourbon Sour, to name but a few from the accomplished cocktail menu. The wine list is also more than decent, ensuring no dish goes eaten without a worthy counterpart.
THE WEEKEND: There’s a menu and then there’s a Sunday Menu, so obviously this requires its own section. Regardless of whether the end of the week takes you on a pilgrimage for poultry or has you making a bee-line for beef, you won’t be left wanting. With thyme and garlic butter free-range chicken breast, slow roasted carved leg of Launde Farm lamb or Aberdeen Angus beef onglet marinated in Fourpure Brewery’s Oatmeal stout (ooosh), you’ve got more than enough to choose from before building the plate up with their array of equally stunning sides.
No matter when you go or what you go for… you’ll be laughing in nutritional rapture.
NOTE: The Laughing Gravy is open Mon-Thurs 12-3pm & 5-10pm, Fri & Sat 12-3pm & 5-10.30pm, Sun 12-4.30pm. You can find out more, and book a table, right HERE.
