Please note: The Malt House is temporarily closed. However they’re hoping to be back very soon. You can keep up to date with exact details via their website here.
Wander down the little cobbled street just off Fulham Broadway station, and at the end of it you’ll find a pub with a 300 year history. But in that 300 year history, the best period has almost certainly been in the last decade.
Not that being a Victorian-era boozer wasn’t a noble & respectable thing to do. It’s just that in 2013 the venue was taken over by the Bosi brothers, Claude & Cedric. And it just so happens that Claude has opened not one, not two, but three 2-Michelin Star restaurants in his time. Which is quite a lot. And for a pub, that’s a reasonably good person to have as your owner, because it means you’re now definitely a gastropub. And a good one at that.
After taking over the Malt House, Claude and his brother decided to refurbish it and – shocker – revamp the menu a bit. They bussed in chef Paul Merrett to run the kitchen (his cooking has won Michelin Stars twice before), and he’s amped up the pub food considerably. You can now get the likes of a pan-fried halibut with Greek-style skordalia potato (they’re so rich they might make a meek diner faint) and a chargrilled Calcot onion; or a chicken, smoked ham & leek pie that’s freshly prepped to order – they each take 25mins to arrive at the table. Round it all out with a literal pubs-worth of booze (including a wine list curated by the grape gurus at Berry Bros. & Rudd), and you’ve got a pretty decent time on your hands.
The decor is simple and unpretentious, with a lot of unvarnished wood and studded banquette seating, and there are even half a dozen rooms upstairs for guests to stay in overnight – a hangover from the venue’s founding three centuries ago, back when all pubs were inns with rooms.
Only now there are homemade cookies on your pillow.
NOTE: The Malt House is currently closed for refurbishment. We’ll update the page once it’s opened. In the meantime, you can find out more at their website right HERE.
