The Marquee Moon

The Cause has a new project to get behind.

The duo behind the legendary docklands club space are about to revamp an old Dalston boozer, filling it with good food, cocktails, and DJs who’ll lead the dancing into the early hours.

The old boozer in question is The Marquis of Landsdowne, which they’re renaming in a nod to Television’s cult 1977 album. They’ll be giving the place a top-to-bottom polish, from the ground floor, where the main dining and dancing space will be, to the subterranean cocktail bar in the basement. Upstairs, a bespoke terrazzo counter will anchor the room, with sleek curving lines, wood panelling and palm fronds nodding to art deco aesthetics. Downstairs, things’ll skip forward a couple of decades with more of a mid-century tone, lined with vibrant tiling.

In honour of their new digs’ past life, the menu will be inspired by modern pub classics, given an East and South Asian twist by chef Huri Rapana Neil (who comes here from an exec chef stint at Portobello 177). Expect the likes of masala potato flatbreads; beef rendang pie with boozy gravy; and Thai sai ua sausage with kimchi gravy & mash. There’ll also be a weekly sandwich, inspired by Neil’s time spent running the Hero Sandwich House delis back in his native Auckland – kicking off with a chicken char siu sando with fermented ginger cream. And to finish? Pimped-up English puds like the rice pudding brûlée and a retro negroni jelly sundae.

As the night wears on, the hifi system will be turned up, and a slew of talented selectors from The Cause’s little black book will take to the decks. The idea is to give them free rein in their pickings, bringing some more esoteric stuff to the fore, before lapsing into more danceable tracks as the party gets going. And you’ll have plenty of disco fuel to see you through: The Ned‘s Emmanuel Ferris-Hue has put together an eclectic list of signature cocktails like the Pandan Old Fashioned, which mingles bourbon with clarified brown butter, chocolate bitters, demerara sugar and a pandan leaf; a sushi rice-washed negroni; and the Hot Alfonso Marg, which employs some sous-vide wizardry to make the most intensely mango-flavoured take on the classic you’ve likely ever tasted.

On top of all this, GM Rosa Salice has put together a natural wine list that genuinely plumbs the depths of the world’s most unusual bottles – including a vegan Georgian red aged the traditional way in ancient qveri vessels.

Just ’cause.
