Rouge | Refreshingly Modern Cabaret On The Southbank
…that’s likely the colour you’ll leave this new Underbelly show. Especially if you’re with your grandparents. We’d leave them at home…
At one point you’re sat watching a female dominatrix wearing a strap-on carrot whip three male unicorns on their hands and knees. Scissor Sisters’ ‘Let’s Have A Kiki’ plays loudly in the background. And yet it’s exactly moments like this that make the show – a refreshingly modern, all-inclusive, tongue-in-cheek cabaret – so great, merging slapstick comedy, opera, acrobatics, and dance, with an up-beat, pop-heavy soundtrack that tempts you into singing along.
At points it’s a little chaotic, sometimes a tad cringe; but overall it makes for a pretty joy-filled hour of your life.
Rouge has its slightly more serious moments too. A couple of solo aerial performances from outrageously ripped men and women showcase exactly how much hard work and dedication goes into being an acrobatic performer. There’s nail-biting flips and twists on and off people’s hands and shoulders; fire-throwing, hula-hooping…
…and then you’re back, shimmying along as fully grown men booty shake in custom black hoodies like Beyoncé.
Needless to say, it’s not one to be missed.
NOTE: Rouge is running at the Underbelly Festival on the South Bank from the 28th of August until the 15th of September. Tickets start at £21.50. For more information, or to book, visit their website here.
