Crayfish Bob’s Crawfish Boil is:
1) A raucous, pretty much all-you-can-eat Louisiana-style cook out, where you’ll roll up your sleeves and feast on Cajun-spiced seafood from the Deep South and generous schooners of mead.
2) One hell of a tongue-twister. Particularly after a generous schooner of mead.
It’s a weekly event returning to Gosnell’s taproom on the Bermondsey Beer Mile this summer, running every Thursday night from July till mid-October. And if you’ve ever been to Louisiana – or failing that, one of Decatur’s pop-up seafood boils here in London – you’ll know the drill. A banqueting table is laid out with newspaper and loaded up with boiled crawfish (cooked up in an authentic Southern spice mix), kielbasa (smoked sausage originally hailing from Poland), corncobs and potatoes – and you’re invited to just dive on in.
There’ll be hearty refills throughout the night, so there’s absolutely no risk of going home hungry. And just for an additional dash of authenticity The Crawdaddies will be providing a soundtrack of live zydeco music, with its distinctive NOLA combo of washboard, accordion, and an almost bewitching power to get your feet tapping.
As for this Crayfish Bob character? Well, he is a real guy, and a pretty interesting one at that: he’s one of only a few licensed crayfish trappers in the UK. He has the solemn task of keeping American crayfish from overpopulating British waters, where they threaten the endangered native species. So in other words… it’s practically your duty to the environment to come here, and spend a balmy summer’s evening overindulging on shellfish and mead.
You really are a saint.
NOTE: Crayfish Bob’s Crawfish Boils take place weekly from 4th July – 10th October 2024. Tickets cost 54 including all your grub and a welcome schooner, and you can book HERE.
