Despite the difficulties of the pandemic, Brexit, the cost of living crisis and pretty much everything else the last few years have thrown at them, London’s cinemas have still managed to stay afloat.
Which is especially important for this particular cinema.
Popping up once again for the summer season, this floating cinema sets up shop amidst the unique surroundings of St. Katharine Docks. Once a working docks, the 200 year old warehouse buildings now look onto a marina populated with yachts and waterside dining terraces. And, apparently, cinemas. Taking over a floating pontoon, they put up a screen, a canopy for shade/rain cover, and a constellation of festoon lighting, while the place is strewn with deckchairs and gigantic, two-person sofa bean-bags.
Tickets are now on sale for the summer season, which runs from 17th-21st July. Loaded onto the slate is a line-up of suitably aquatic classics, including The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and The Life Aquatic. There’s also small bar to the side for liquid refreshment, although don’t go overboard – the place is literally floating already, and the organisers are keen to point out that the whole venue will be gently bobbing in the water throughout the screening…
…so there is a chance you might literally go overboard.
NOTE: The St. Katharine Dock Floating Cinema is back from 17th-21st July. You can see what’s on, and book tickets, here.
