Frieze Sculpture 2023

Art is long, life is short.

Which is why you should hotfoot it along to the Frieze Sculpture exhibition 2023, now back for an 11th year at the English Gardens in Regent’s Park.

Held at the same time as the famous Frieze art fair, the aim is to transform the park into “a museum without walls” by filling the place with sculptures from some of the most exciting names in modern art. It is, however, better than the famous art fair because:

1) It’s free. And

2) It comes with an interactive map and audio guide, so you can find out precisely why you’re looking at a really, really tall pillar of self-watering moss, and make appreciative murmurs while stroking your chin accordingly.

This year, Frieze Sculpture has been curated by Fatoş Üstek, who’s picked out a 21-strong line-up of artists, many of whom are exhibiting major public works for the first time. She’s also the one narrating the audio guide, so you can get a uniquely personal insight into why she selected each piece for the show.

So what can you expect? Well, there’s a beautiful billowing abstract number by Yinka Shonibare (whose vibrant works you might have seen adorning the new incarnation of the Gallery dining room at Sketch London); Hank Willis Thomas‘ monumental Afro comb; the unnerving sight of the Grim Reaper coming towards you thanks to NYC artist Josh Smith; an abstract piece from the 70s created by the pioneering Louise Nevelson; aaand Tony Matelli’s eerily life-like man sleepwalking across the grass in his pants.

Though it’s probably not the first time that’s been seen in Regent’s Park.

NOTE: Frieze Sculpture 2023 runs until 29th October in the English Gardens at Regent’s Park. It’s free, and there’s no need to book ahead. You can find out more right HERE.
