Things To Do

In The Dark

A pretty unusual live music event is coming to London next year.

And ironically, you won’t want to be left in the dark about it.

In The Dark is a series of mystery gigs & concerts held in beautiful, unusual settings across the city, where you’ll get to hear world-class musicians play anything from nu-folk to classical compositions, just feet away from you. Only, you’ll be blindfolded for the whole thing.

Well, technically, you’ll be wearing a sleeping mask, which sounds a) a lot more comfortable, and b) less like you’re being kidnapped. The idea is that, by stripping back other sensory details, you’ll be able to engage with the music in a pure, unhindered way and access some kind of zen monk-like level of relaxation. And it’s a pretty impressive feat for the musicians, too, who’ll be playing from memory in near-total darkness too.

Returning in January 2025 after a sell-out debut run, each concert lasts for around an hour, taking place in some of London’s most unique and stunning venues (not that you’ll be seeing much of them, of course). They include the historic Smithfield church of St Bartholomew The Great (you’ll recognise it from the fourth wedding in Four Weddings and a Funeral); the atmospheric Chain Store next to London’s only lighthouse, Trinity Buoy Wharf; and a special Burns Night edition staged on the moored-up tall ship, the Cutty Sark.

They won’t, however, be playing pirated music…

NOTE: In The Dark takes place on various dates throughout January, February and March 2025, at three venues. You can find out more, and book tickets (£35+) on the In The Dark website.
