Mercato Metropolitano Mayfair
London’s next street food market isn’t popping up where you’d quite expect…
…unless you’re thinking of a Grade I listed, deconsecrated church in Mayfair celebrated as one of the finest examples of 19th century Greek revival architecture in London, that once counted President Dwight Eisenhower amongst its regulars.
In which case, it’s exactly where you’d expect.
Sandwiched snugly and somewhat incongruously between two grand mansions, St. Mark’s was built in the 1820s, became the unofficial ‘American church’ during WWII, fell out of use in the 70s, lay abandoned for 20 years and was mooted to become a wellness centre before Lady Sainsbury (of “Sainsbury’s” fame) campaigned against it.
Since then, it’s played host to everything from an elderly outreach centre to a raucous LFW venue, and now, after a painstaking £5m restoration, it’s back in its full former glory – to host the sophomore site of Mercato Metropolitano.
The original is set in a former paper factory in Elephant & Castle; a vast warren of Italian food counters, live music and dance, workshops, a hostel, a brewery, a hidden cinema, and a supermarket. And a boxing gym. And a barbershop.
And they’re going to be just ambitious with their new, 16,000 sq foot site and its resplendent interiors. As you’ve probably deduced from the name, they started up in Italy (they’re partnered with the Slow Food movement), and they’re all about community and sustainable food appreciation. So in Mercato Metropolitano Mayfair – set to open in the next six months – you’ll not only find vendors serving all kinds of international cuisine, a deli, a coffee shop, a florist, a restaurant, cheese and wine stores, a patisserie, a brewery, a cocktail bar and an actual farm inside the church… but also cookery lessons, workshops, and talks held in the vaults below.
Oh, and you’ll probably want to check out the rooftop bar, too.
But by now we’re probably preaching to the converted.
NOTE: Mercato Metropolitano Mayfair is set to open in the next six months. We’ll be back with the full scoop when they do…
