Night Tales | Hackney Street Food & Drink Utopia
When the sun goes down, some people like bedtime stories.
And some people prefer Night Tales.
For those in the latter group, we have some very good news: Night Tales has at last found a permanent home. It’s in Hackney’s Bohemia Place, occupying two railway arches and a vast terrace, and at 9,000 sq ft it’ll be their largest venue yet. Here’s what they have lined up…
Based on a Japanese izakaya, FB uses a huge custom-made charcoal grill to cook up yakitori, grilled seafood from Cornish dayboats, and more. It’s all done under the auspices of head chef Greg Round, who’s has spent time in the kitchens of Pitt Cue Soho and Mayfair’s 2 Michelin starred Umu. Here’s he’s cooking up a menu including standouts like:
- Yakitori | charcoal grilled with either salt or sauce, served with shichimi togarashi, lemon and fresh crisp cabbage leaf and grated daikon.
- Fried Quail | karaage-style whole boneless quail marinaded in shio koji and deep fried, tossed in honey, garlic and mustard glaze with garlic chips.
- Grilled fish | salt-grilled day boat fish fillet with crispy skin and juicy flakey flesh served with grated daikon & spicy ponzu dipping sauce.
- Crab Monaka | a crab sandwich made up of picked white crab meat, myoga, chives, shiso, cucumber and yuzu presented in a crispy rice cracker monaka shell.
SONS OF SLICE
After a popular residency in Hackney Wick, SoS is back with their NY-style pizza cooked up by brothers Tommy and Andy Fitzmaurice. They’ll be slinging their favourites, including their salami & nduja-loaded Big Red, and the Buffalo Soldier, topped with hot sauce marinated chicken thighs, red pepper & blue cheese drizzle.
A JAPANESE GARDEN BAR
This 4,000 sq ft sucker has been designed to utilize its sunny positioning. The sheer vastness of the space also allows for multi-functional use, acting as an extension to the club at one end of the garden, and a manicured ‘food court’ terrace full of lush green plants and foliage at the other (that’s where you can find both Fat Baby and Sons of Slice).
Thery’ve got private day beds, booths, and the cocktail bar will come with an impressive waterfall backdrop, as well as serving Japanese inspired High Ball cocktails (such as their Tokyo Old Fashioned), plus top shelf sakes, long drinks (like their very refreshing Hibiscus Shim) and massive spritz bowls to share.
AN ASAHI SUPER DRY BAR
Yes, it’s a beer bar. Serving one kind of beer.
AN AGAVE BAR
Lit almost exclusively by neon, expect a killer lineup of mezcals & tequilas plus rotating special cocktails, such as the Paloma Place (made with tequila, Amaro Montenegro, grapefruit sherbet, prosecco & soda), or their weather-friendly Frozen Hurricane, whose mezcal & reyes chilli liqueur are offset with agave ice.
And by ‘live’ we mean ‘spun by a DJ’, but it still kind of counts. In their storied past, they’ve hosted vinyl-pilots including Rudimental, Groove Armada, and Gorgon City – and this summer they’re kicking things off with sets from James Lavelle, Django Django, FOALS, and more.
This ain’t no old wives Tales.
