To be clear, this isn’t how we normally approach these articles.
But basically, comedian, crustacean lover, and tattoo aficionado Olga Koch’s agent got in touch with us to tell us that she has a new show out. And, already being big fans of both Olga and her wonderfully suggestive surname, we asked for a few more details about it. But then Olga herself replied with a rather witty, stream-of-consciousness style manifesto on her creative process, money, and toe-sucking.
So, without further ado, we’ll let Olga take it from here:
Usually, I start writing a show after I come up with the title. My last show was called Prawn Cocktail and I named it way before I wrote it. I was originally going to write a show about going sober – the title referring to the fact that the only drink I’d be able to order at a bar would be a “prawn cocktail”. As clever as that title is for a show about sobriety, I forgot to actually stop drinking so that became somewhat of a problem by the time I had to start performing the show. My workaround for this was to get my first ever tattoo, a tattoo of a prawn on my foot, and make it a show about making impulsive decisions after turning 30. You know, impulsive like getting a tattoo of a prawn just to justify the fact that you named your show Prawn Cocktail. As insane as all of this sounds, I actually don’t regret the tattoo at all. Even though after I got said tattoo I did find out that “shrimping” means to suck on someone’s toes for sexual pleasure. Luckily, I’m into that. My current show is called Olga Koch Comes From Money. I bet you can guess what it’s about. It’s about prawns. Kidding! It’s a show about money and privilege and performing it is the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Which should give you an idea of just how easy my life has been. Come along! (if only to see my prawn tattoo).
Is this one huge ad for Olga’s show? Basically yes (but legally no, just to be absolutely clear). Do we particularly care? Also yes. We care because she’s very funny, and is generally great, and we’re happy to support her. The Edinburgh debut of this particular act has racked up a huge number of 4&5-star reviews, so if any of what she said resonated with you, then you need to immediately book tickets to her show, and help Olga work towards her dream of not being poor.
NOTE: Olga Koch Comes From Money is playing at the Soho Theatre until 21st December 2024. You can find out more, and get a ticket at the Soho Theatre website.
