Things To Do

Peninsula Golf Range

You should never drink and drive.

It can really affect your swing.

But if you’re at the Peninsula Golf Range, and they happen to have a restaurant with a 600 bottle-strong wine list… it might just be worth it.

The whole enterprise is both absolutely huge, and pretty state of the art. It opened in 2015, and encompasses a whopping 20,000m² of floodlit playing green and driving range astroturf, alongside a pair of restaurants, a golf shop, and more.

The driving range itself is genuinely huge. It’s a curved monolith arcing along the Thames, and has 60 individual bays set across two tiers. It’s perpetually busy, and each month it sees around 1.5 million balls satisfyingly thwacked in the general direction of Canary Wharf. Every bay includes its own sofa and coffee table, and it’s a relatively reasonable £12 per hour to do the thwacking.

The restaurants (yes, plural) include The Joint which is – in their own words – “No fine-dining, just a messy sauce everywhere and ‘laugh with your friends’ kind of BBQ joint.” And when you consider that this means you can get a 16hr smoked pulled pork bun with a side of sweet potato fries and some deep-fried Oreos to finish, that’s no bad thing at all. If you’re after something a little more refined, then you can alway hang your hat up at Vinothec Compass, a Basque-influenced restaurant & bar where you can get yourself some tapas. It’s also the home to that aforementioned biblical wine list, which you’ll see laid out before you in the form of a LED illuminated ‘wall of wine’. Oh, and it has a cigar patio and a roof terrace, just for good measure.

Oh, it’s almost an afterthought, but there’s crazy golf too. Yep, 18 holes inspired by famed holes from around the world. And finally, there’s the shop. And usually, this wouldn’t be worth more than a passing mention, only this one’s 3,000 sq ft, and it’s got its now little putting green inside.

And they probably play swing music.
