So, it’s no secret that Secret Cinema hasn’t exactly been on its best form ever since being sold to a Faceless Corporate Entity a couple of years ago…
…but hopefully, they’re getting their groove back with their forthcoming production of Grease.
It’s hitting town this summer (yes! We can all sing Summer Nights on actual summer nights!) between August 1st & 7th September in Battersea’s Evolution centre, a venue so vast it probably has its own postcode. Plans are for there to be a whole fairground with Americana style diners, themed food & drinks, live music, dancing, and a screening of the film itself, which will all be integrated into the live performances, all over the course of 3.5 hours give-or-take.
Of course, all that stuff is par for the course for Secret Cinema productions. They’ve recreated whole towns, driven Bond cars through cinemas, and had indoor rain – a fairground and some jitterbugging ’50s high school students is a slow Tuesday for them. Still, that doesn’t make it any less fun.
But our reason for optimistically dusting off our leather jackets & pink satin bombers? Is that they’ve put on a full-scale production of Grease already (up in Birmingham in ’23). Reviews were pretty great, so they hope is that they’re going to bring that greased-lighting-without-the-massively-inappropriate-lyrics nostalgic energy here, too.
The plan is for Secret Cinema to keep booking the Evolution venue each summer, with new productions slated for ’26 and ’27, of as-yet unannounced (or, you could say, ‘secret’) movies.
Let’s just hope they’re the ones that we want.
NOTE: Grease by Secret Cinema is set to run from August 1st – 7th September in Battersea’s Evolution centre. Tickets go on general sale in March, and you’ll be able to get them from the show’s official website.
