Things To Do

Silent Disco in the Crypt

Crypts are normally dead quiet.

So yes, it was something of an off-piste move when St. Martin-in-the-Fields started hosting jazz bands and live music nights in the subterranean sepulchre beneath their central London church.

Now – presumably to return the crypt to its peaceful, uninterrupted state – they’re going to be hosting an event that’s completely silent…

…to anyone not wearing a luminous headset that’s pumping out dance music for four hours non-stop.

As settings for a silent disco go, it doesn’t get much more atmospheric than this. The crypt at St. Martin-in-the-Fields dates back to – well, when Trafalgar Square actually had fields. You’ll be dancing under a dramatically up-lit vaulted brick ceiling, while the floor is paved with historic 18th century tombstones (nobody’s actually buried in there anymore, so don’t worry – there won’t be any literal dancing on people’s graves).

On the headsets, a trio of DJs will be duking it out for your attention, allowing you to effectively curate your own playlist for the night. And to give you the pep to keep dancing until 2am, there’ll be a bar serving beers, wines and spirits from beyond the earthly realm.

It’s all being run by The Silent Disco, so you can expect a pretty slickly-run night given that a) they’re called The Silent Disco, and b) they’ve already held similar parties across some of London’s most iconic venues, including the Natural History Museum, the zoo and the Shard. So, put simply, they know what they’re doing…

…they just don’t shout about it.

NOTE: Silent discos in the crypt next take place on 17th March, 14th April and 6th May 2023. Tickets cost £15 – you can find out more, and book, HERE.
