Generally, they don’t end well.

Unless the competition regards The Cinnamon Club (the glorious Indian fine dining restaurant in Westminster) and results in you and a companion sharing an intimate, sumptuously-prepared dinner worth £310 in the atmospheric surroundings of a Grade II-listed former library.

Which, coincidentally, this does.

It’s all in honour of the return of Taste of London 2017, which will once more be occupying Regent’s Park for a few days in June and transforming it into a bustling hive of gourmand activity. This year there will be tasting masterclasses, artisan cheese-paired whiskey dinners, a cookery school led by teachers from the School of Wok and Le Cordon Bleu, a secret cocktail den, four-course meals cooked and served by chefs like Ollie Dabbous and Alex Atala and tasting stations with 160 dinky portions of different signature dishes from 40 of London’s most exciting restaurants.

One of which, naturally, is The Cinnamon Club.

And as a sort of taster for those tasters, they’re offering the chance to come and sample their pioneering contemporary Indian cuisine in the form of a decadent – and completely complimentary – meal. Here, under the masterful direction of Vivek Singh, they serve up delicately spiced, tandoori-cooked game dishes like red deer loin with black flower reduction, elegant seafood like Bengali-style lobster thermidor or tandoori octopus with chutney aloo, and flavoursome vegetable dishes like spinach and cep curry, and okra stuffed with peanut and jaggery (cane sugar).

In fact, the biggest challenge you’ll face is just picking what to order.
