The Agave Sessions | Tequila Masterclasses in Notting Hill
Holding a tequila masterclass in a gin distillery might, to some, seem sacrilegious.
But when you consider the number of gin distilleries in London (24) and the number of tequila distilleries (0), it begins to make a teeny bit more sense. And if you’re going to pick anywhere to appreciate a fine spirit, then the four-story gin palace that is The Distillery is enough to put anyone in, well, fine spirits.
So welcome to The Agave Sessions: a comprehensive breakdown of everything that makes tequila great, from cactus to consumption, hosted in partnership with the peeps at Herradura Tequila. Here’s how it all goes down:
First up, one of the agave-experts will give you a little background on just what tequila is and how they make it, from the intricate harvesting, to the distillation process. Next up, you’ll get a little history – you’ll learn about heritage, mystery and myths surrounding the stuff.
Of course, all of this will be illustrated with a little tasting, with sips from a spectrum of smooth tequilas and smokey mezcals. And then the cocktails will come, including the likes of the Margarita and Paloma, with a little Mexican food to help provide some welcome ballast.
Finally, once you’ve gotten fully to grips with the ins-and-outs of the stuff, you’ll get to try ageing your own: you’ll receive a bottle of Herradura Blanco and a small barrel made from charred American White Oak that was made on Herradura’s cooperage in Mexico specifically for this course. You can then take it away to rest at home – but let’s not beat around the agave plant…
…we all know it might not make it that long.
