VAULT Festival 2020 | An Underground Artistic Bonanza
Coming third in the North Korean marathon.
Becoming a cat burglar.
Sitting on a cactus. Naked.
These are just a few of the many hundreds of topics that will be playfully thrown around on stage at the Vault Festival, to make you laugh, cry, and indeed cry laughing. And if there’s an art to organising all of these artistic endeavours, then after eight years in the game Vault Festival has gotten that art down to a science: for the new decade the organisers have lined up over 420 shows, from 2,000 artists, across 20 venues, in 8 action-packed weeks, with exactly 1 particle accelerator.
It all takes place in Waterloo’s underground tunnels, where it gives a (frequently literal) platform to some of the best up-and-comers from the worlds of art, theatre, comedy, live music, immersive entertainment, and more. You know, culture. Here are just some of the many, many shows & experiences on offer:
How I Came Third in the North Korean Marathon – On April 8th 2018, comedian Dan Kelly came third in the North Korean Marathon. This is the story of how.
Moonlight Hustle – From Rogue Productions (The Crystal Maze Live, Heist, Time Run, etc.) this immersive experience pits you, and all your criminal skills, against a ruthless gang of fellow crooks all vying to steal some extremely shiny treasure. You’ll have to become a cat burglar, a con artist, and a ruthless thief to win.
The Indecent Musings of Miss Doncaster 2007 – Having seen her life turn a little downhill from its apogee up on stage back in ’07, the former Miss Doncaster believed her life couldn’t get much worse. Until she sits on a cactus. Naked.
Jamali Maddix: Strip Club Einstein – As seen on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and more, this up and coming comedian boasts “Something to offend everyone”.
Over My Dad’s Body – Simon David’s dad just died. Can he still justify his outrageous, camp cabaret? (Spoiler: somehow, yes).
Push – Finally, answering the age-old, much-ruminated question: exactly how pregnant is too pregnant to perform a one-woman show?
Fireworks – What happens when the CERN Large Hadron collider splits time into two? Find out at this show. Or shows. It’s something of a conundrum.
Obviously there are literally hundreds more performances, plus parties, a pop up cinema, a ton of Lates, plus pop up restaurants, bars, and more.
In fact, you’ll likely have to split your own time in two.
NOTE: VAULT Festival takes place from January 28 to March 22 in venues across Waterloo. You can find out more, see the full line-up, and get tickets at their website right HERE.n
