Despite how things may feel, optimism is not a thing of the past – because the past very much is a thing of optimism.
At least, that’s the subject of our next upcoming Nudge Talk, taking place at Kindred on August 7th, in which social philosopher Roman Krznaric will discuss ‘Five Reasons For Hope From History’. Yes, you read that right, hope.
That’s the broad theme of his latest book, History For Tomorrow, in which he draws fascinating insights from the last 1000 years of world history, and how time and again societies have risen up, often against the odds, to overcome crises and fight injustices. And, importantly, he also explores how those lessons could help us confront the most urgent challenges of the twenty-first century.

So just who is Roman Krznaric? Well, his list of achievements is pretttttty lengthy, but here are the greatest hits: he has a PHD in political science, he’s a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University’s Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing, he’s a founder of the world’s first Empathy Museum, he was one of the founding faculty members of The School of Life in London, he’s got several International bestselling books under his belt (published in more than 25 languages), and his TED talk is currently clocking in at +1.5m views. He’s basically the human equivalent of a mic drop.
And as for the venue, Kindred is an ex private members club-turned-community-space serving up cultural and private events, co-working and all-day dining in Hammersmith. It’s set in a huge Georgian mansion first build in the 1700s, and filled with just the kind of sweeping staircases, huge windows, and stately grandeur that you’d expect (and rounded out with the kind of modern touches you’d love). Things will kick off with a cocktail at the bar – you’ll get one included in your ticket from our bespoke menu – then proceed to the talk itself.
As usual with our Nudge Talks, there’ll be some back and forth with the audience, and there’ll be plenty more cocktails available from what happens to be an absolutely stellar bar. We’ve held a couple of talks here before, and it’s always been lovely. So it ought to be a great evening….
