Eric’s Bakery | East Dulwich Bakehouse

As Alexander Graham Bell once said, ‘When one Flor closes, another door opens‘.

And that door is to Eric’s Bakery, the new East Dulwich bakehouse from Helen Evans.

Evans has travelled far and wide to master her baking skills – from Melbourne to Lima – and most recently was Head Baker at Flor, which, despite being widely regarded as one of the best bakeries in London, sadly closed for good in winter 2022. As it goes in the circle of life though, it’s not all doom and gloom, and the end of Flor has paved the way for the start of Evans’ first solo project, Eric’s Bakery.

The patch she’s picked out is a bright corner spot on Upland Road in East Dulwich, just behind Peckham Rye park (a Sunday walk beckons…). It’s a dinky but bright space, decked out in sunshine-hued tiles and light ash wood fittings. There’s a small collection of interesting wines up for grabs, as well as fresh coffee and the day’s bakes, loaded up on racks fresh from the oven.

If you’ve ever been around the Spa Terminus area, or at least within smelling distance, then you’ll know Evans was really delivering the goods at Flor, and she’s turning out even more golden goodies here at Eric’s. Open only on Fridays and Saturdays each week (and closing whenever the baked treats sell out), the offering changes every day. But if you want a taste of Eric’s on the daily? Evans will be sharing some of her baking wisdom at upcoming workshops, in which she’ll teach you how to make everything from puff pastry to croissants, with help from visiting collaborators like Anna Higham and Sarah Lemanski.

Sounds like they’ll be worth the dough…
