Moto | Japanese sake bar in Covent Garden
For all the multitude of delicious ways to serve rice, by far the best is to drink it.
And soon, Covent Garden is going to be one of the best places in London to do that, thanks to Moto, the new dedicated sake bar coming its way this October. In fact, it touts itself as “the UK’s first independent Japanese beverage bar & shop”, so it might be one of the only places to get the stuff.
It’s named after the fermentation starter used in the more traditional sake breweries, and it’ll have plenty of them represented on its shelves – there’ll be craft sakes, rare bottles, vintages, and dozens of popular brands too, many of them sourced directly from the breweries themselves. Then there are the other Japanese drinks, of which there promise to be plenty; shochu, gin, whisky, etc.
The space its taking over is a slender sleeve on Maiden Lane that used to be a tapas joint (Sibarita), and it’ll have room for around 25 people, with mostly bar seating. Speaking of which, there’ll be rotating bar snacks on offer too, including tempura-style chicken (made with a sake batter), chilled ‘Hiyayakko’ tofu, and grilled miso salmon among others, and it’s all designed to pair with their sakes. And if you fancy, you can always buy a bottle to take home with you.
For your own sake.
NOTE: Moto’s opening date has been pushed back due to building issues. Check back for more updates soon, or you can keep an eye on their website right HERE.
