Depending on your relationship status, googling this show is either going to helpfully, or unhelpfully, skew your algorithm for a while.
So here’s the low-down: Why Am I So Single? is a brand new musical opening in London this summer, from the creators of SIX, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss.
That show started out as a student production up at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. And weirdly, it remains pretty much the only show on the writers’ CVs – because it’s been so barnstormingly successful that it transferred to the West End, has been extended so many times that it’s basically a permanent fixture, and has in the meantime spawned new productions and tours on Broadway, in South Korea, and around Australia.
So to put it mildly, the announcement that they’ve come up with a second show is a big deal.
They’re describing it as a “big, fancy musical”, which might sound odd coming from a creative team who already have a Tony Award under their belt – but where SIX is styled like a pop concert, Why Am I So Single? will be a more traditional musical, with big sets, costume changes and all that.
The plot follows a couple of best friends (musical writers, coincidentally), played by SIX touring star Leesa Tulley and &Juliet’s Jo Foster. With a deadline looming, they lock themselves in their flat to start composing – and ultimately find themselves musing on love, friendship, and the horrors of modern dating. An early preview last year already netted some positive feedback, and given the runaway success of their partnership so far, this show’s set to be a doozy…
…at the very least, it’ll make a good addition to their dating profiles.
