Sounds and Sorcery | Celebrating Disney Fantasia
Back in the ’30s, nobody could have predicted that an animation featuring enchanted broomsticks would turn out to be one of the most iconic, successful films of all time…
But they really made a clean sweep.
And to celebrate this revolutionary piece of cinema – and a certain mouse’s 90th anniversary – The Vaults are taking you on a kaleidoscopic, multi-sensory voyage through a series of awe-inspiring, artistic installations inspired by the worlds of Disney Fantasia.
It’s called Sounds and Sorcery, and essentially sees the labyrinthine network of tunnels beneath Waterloo station metamorphose into their stunning, subterranean interpretation of the film’s most familiar scenery, brought atmospherically to life with light and sound.
At the start of the evening you’ll be handed your headset, which has been equipped with its own form of technical wizardry to allow you to immerse yourself in the corresponding music as you explore enchanted woodland, barren prehistoric deserts, and dancing hippos in a Grecian paradise.
And while we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise by telling you exactly what to expect, just know that each of these spaces will be filled with trippy visual effects, spellbinding live performance, insane 3D projections and unbelievably detailed sets – all accompanied by the soundtrack of some of the best-known pieces of music from the Baroque through to the 20th century, including The Nutcracker Suite and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.
And when you’ve emerged from this series of surreal, dreamlike installations, there’ll of course be a suitably otherworldly bar in which to process what you’ve just experienced, late into the night.
It could get wild.
But don’t worry. We hear there’s a perfectly reliable clean-up team on board…
