Festivals are wonderful.

If you like sleeping rough camping.

However if you enjoy the joyful, life-affirming festival experience but also like sleeping in your own bed… then you should round up some friends and take a day trip to Standon Calling at the end of July.

Located about 40 minutes north of London (which is quick to get to by train or car, and – if you go with 3 friends – costs just £15 each to get to from central London in a taxi), it’s a boutique festival located in the grounds of a beautiful 16th Century manor house which – crucially – is the only UK festival to have a heated swimming pool.

It started 10 years ago with just 25 friends, a set of decks and a birthday BBQ… but is now known as the place to go both to uncover new artists, and to enjoy some more established ones (like The Dandy Warhols, Basement Jaxx, The Magic Numbers and Roots Manuva… all of whom are performing this year).

Head along either for a day or the entire weekend, and in addition to the music (which is kind of a big deal) you’ll find immersive theatre, trapeze lessons, Rockaoke, a wild west summer camp, the cut-throat cabaret show, voodoo taxi wagon rides, a gospel choir, lots of space to sunbathe and listen to music, line dancing flashmobs, Death Drawing with Art Macabre, and all of the best festival food traders in one place: from Anna Mae’s and Bhangra Bus to The Creperie, Crabbieshack, and Flaming Cactus.

In addition there’s a theme this year (as there is every year) and it’s ‘A Town Of Two Faces’, where by day you’ll find the festival populated with tough-talkin’ cowboys, greedy prospectors and gun-slinging outlaws, and where by night (as things start to get weird) you’ll find makeshift monsters and bogeymen channeling their inner demons under the moonlight, and embracing all things dark…

Like Espresso Martinis, for example.

NOTE: Standon Calling runs from Friday 31st July – Sunday 2nd August 2015 at Standon Lordship, Standon, SG11 1EE. For any additional information or for any questions and queries, please email [email protected].
