NYC-style pizza pies. Icebox cheesecakes. Dirty martinis.
This EVE is tempting you with a lot more than an apple.
It’s a gorgeously stylish restaurant tucked below the Ember Locke hotel in Kensington, which aside from offering a beautiful bar, space for coworking and a lush garden terrace, now boasts a takeover menu from Brooklyn pizzeria Proper Slice.
It’s all sprawled across the ground floor of the hotel’s revamped Edwardian mansion block. And like the rooms upstairs, the décor is a striking maximalist blend of curving velvet banquettes, chequered tiling, fringed lampshades and a small jungle’s worth of plants dotted about.
As for that menu… Proper Slice started out in Brooklyn, made a significant pitstop in Singapore, and has now landed here to deliver New York-style slices to West London. Their pizzas are all made with 48h fermented sourdough, before being slung in the stone oven and topped with deliciousness like spicy meatballs and pickled chillies; artichokes, olives & jalapeños; and salami & stracciatella on a spicy vodka tomato base. There’s ranch dressing, hot sauce and extra marinara pizza sauce to dip your crusts into, and a load of classic sides from buffalo fried chicken to garlic knots and Caesar salads. And you can finish up with some good ol’ apple pie (with whipped cream and caramel sauce), or an ‘icebox cheesecake’, which is a no-bake cheesecake set in the fridge, and drizzled with blueberry sauce.
And to wash it all down? You’ll find a super-tight list of just one wine of each colour, alongside Brooklyn brewery beers and a quartet of old-school cocktails, including manhattans, margaritas and dirty martinis garnished with a giant olive.
Sounds like paradise.
