We’re here today to talk about ice cream.
And before you remind us, yes, we did get the memo, and yes, we do know it’s not summer anymore.
But this is different. You see, as the chillier weather draws in, & ice-cold desserts tend to fall by the culinary wayside, the esteemed purveyors of London’s finest Italian ice cream at Gelupo have decided to lean into the season and turn the place into a cosy, wintery Alpine ski lodge filled with boozy warm drinks, silky hot chocolates, and delicious Italian gelato, among many, many other gloriously comforting things.
Step inside, and you’ll find that the shop has been transformed into a cabin-style bolt hole, with twinkling fairy lights and faux fur throws adorning the place. On the menu, there’s a lot to get through, with new festive flavours including toasty caramel gingerbread, chocolate spiced with orange and clove, buttery panettone, and persimmons sorbet. Those flavours can then be wrapped inside a fluffy, toasted Sicilian brioche bun (for Brioche con Gelato), or served as a ‘chocolate affogato’ with a jug of Gelupo’s thick & silky hot chocolate to pour over the top.
If you’re in the mood for something to drink, then they’ve got a pretty healthy lineup there, too, with some of the showstoppers including:
- Vin Brulé: the Italian secret-spiced answer to mulled wine.
- Spiked Hot Chocolates: with a kick of nutty Frangelico or almond-esque amaretto.
- Bombardino: A boozy blanket of home-made zabaione and brandy, crowned with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon.
- Café Bicerin: A trifecta of espresso, cocoa, and cream with a brandy boost, hailing from Turin.
- Hot Limoncello Toddy: Whisky and lemon hug it out with honey & cloves.
All of which means that the cosiest place in London this winter is probably…
…an ice cream place.
