The word moco means ‘bogey’ in Spanish… which means that currently in Barcelona, there’s a place called ‘The Bogey Museum’.
And now London’s about to get its own Moco Museum, too. The word is actually a portmanteau of ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’, with the idea being that it all leans slightly into street art in a way that perhaps the Tate Modern doesn’t.
The whole operation started in Amsterdam back in 2016, before moving into a suitably arty spot in Barcelona a couple of years later. And, translation hiccups aside, apparently it’s been something of a success, netting 4 million visitors throughout its time, hence why they can spring for a swish new spot opposite Marble Arch.
Some of the artists that they’re bragging about having on their forthcoming London walls include Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and more, although they stop short of providing actual, specific artworks themselves. But you can’t go very wrong with a lineup like that, regardless.
The downside? It’s an independent operation, which means that they’ll have to charge for entry (as they do at their other two outposts). It all starts with a simple £20 ticket, and proceeds all the way up to memberships for £10k per year.
Clearly they’re well versed in the art of making money, too.
