Welcome to Supermax.
Like its namesake prison, half the folks here are behind bars.
This is the subterranean bar from the team behind Spiritland on the Southbank. You’ll find it tucked away underneath the Happy Face pizza joint in a corner of King’s Cross, but it’s worth hunting out, because it’s a suave, louche den for drinking and dancing.
First off, let’s talk about the vibe, because it’s a masterclass in retro-futurism. Picture a ’70s Italian disco smashed into a futuristic space station. It’s all plush velvet, geometric patterns, and neon halos adorning the walls. It’s like a really fun time machine, only one that serves booze.
Speaking of, the underlit bar glows like a beacon for the thirsty. The negronis are excellent, but if you’re after something different the talented barkeeps will even knock up something for you off-menu. And if you fancy a sharpener before dinner, swing by before 7pm, when they run their £7 aperitivo hour.
And when the time is right the DJs kick things up a notch, and the disco ball gets going. The music is – as you might expect – leans towards retro, but each of the DJs has their own style.
And if you want something to help add a little ballast to all that booze? You’re right below Happy Face Pizza, which is the kind of place that slightly tipsy dessicion making was designed for. We’re talking margheritas, funghi, pepperoni and vegan pepperoni, all made with their signature 72 hour-proved dough.
That will give you a happy face.
NOTE: Supermax is open now, Wednesday to Saturday. You can find out more, and make a booking at their website right here.
