Britain and Italy have so much in common.
We both love pizza. We’re big fans of pasta. And we’re highly partial to a negroni.
And yes, sure, Italy might be doing a lot of the heavy lifting in this relationship. But some gloriously comforting things happen when British and Italian influences get together – as you’ll find out in Peckham this May, when a couple of Bocca Di Lupo alums open their nostalgic eatery, Café Britaly.
As for the fried egg on top of this carbonara? Nudge Members are getting in for a couple of exclusive preview nights on 1st – 5th May, with 50% off the food bill to boot.
The menu will lean heavily into London’s legacy of caffs that sprung up with a generation of Italians who moved here in the 50s. You can expect gloriously inauthentic cream-drenched carbonara (topped with a fried egg); full ‘Britalian’ breakfasts of fennel sausage and fried pizza dough; zuppa inglese trifle, and more… and you can also expect it to be absolutely delicious.
After all, Café Britaly comes to you from a pair with stellar credentials: Richard Crampton-Platt and chef Alex Purdie met while working at Bocca Di Lupo. Purdie’s been a Peckham resident for the past decade, too, so he’s already got local suppliers lined up for his border-straddling creations.
If you swung by the site back when it was Supa Ya Ramen you’ll remember it’s a cosy sleeve of a space, with room for just 40. They’re giving the place a slick of nostalgic Britalian charm with green lino flooring, rosy pink banquette seating, and a gallery of colourful abstract screen-prints by Alex’s wife, Kate adorning the off-white walls, in a subtly reference to the Italian tricolore…
Just thought we’d flag that now.
NOTE: Café Britaly is set to open on 8th May. Nudge Members can book in for exclusive preview nights on 1st-5th May, with 50% off the food bill – check the Members’ box above for details.
