Some activities around London aren’t worth the paper it’s printed on.
Others are worth a lot more.
Like the screen printing classes at Sonsoles Print Studio in Peckham. Head over there and you’ll find a one day introductory class for £95 where you’ll be taught all of the basics: how to prepare photo stencils; how to expose them onto a screen; and then how to actually get those stencils onto paper. You can also take more in-depth set of four courses where – on top of all of the above – you’ll tackle designing and preparing physical stencils; layering; colouring; accurate registration (ie. making sure all the different elements line up properly); and much more. At the end of the four weeks you will have designed and printed 3-4 cut-out stencils, as well as a photographic image of your choice. You’ll basically be an expert (after a little bit of extra practice on your part).
All of the necessary materials are included in both prices and the groups are small meaning you’ll get plenty of one-on-one time.
Sonsoles Print Studio offer open access memberships to those who already know what they’re doing. It’s £120 for a year and gets you free use of the space whenever it’s open. Admittedly you do have to book a slot and pay a small session fee on top of that, however it’s no more than the sale of one print. Less even. So as we mentioned…
… very much worth it.
NOTE: Peckham’s Sonsoles Print Studio is open Monday-Saturday. For more information on exact course dates or to buy yourself a membership, visit their website here.
