Well, this looks like the dark horse candidate for the summer’s best event.

Picture yourself on a houseboat, on a balmy summer evening (20th June). And not just any houseboat mind you, but the largest houseboat in the country – a gorgeous converted 1930s steel barge refitted with lavish furnishings. Outside, you can see the tranquil surrounds of St. Katharine Docks, as you bob gently up and down. But calling you further onto the boat is the giddy hum of  excited chatter, the clink of wine glasses, and the aroma of fine foods, being prepared at station after station, all culminating in an on-deck BBQ being skilfully helmed by one of the nation’s most versatile & talented TV chefs, Mike Reid (Culinary Director at M Restaurants and Gaucho. You may recognise him from Saturday Kitchen, Ready Steady Cook, etc).

This is Taste The Unexpected, and it comes courtesy of Dark Horse Wine.

So, what to expect? Well, naturally, the unexpected. But to give you a clue as to what to unexpect, this isn’t going to be some formal sit-down dinner. No, this will be more like choose-your-own wine and dining adventure – a journey of exploration, in which you can freely roam around the boat itself taking in the various tasting stations at your own leisure. Each one will focus on its own bowl or small plate – think Surf’n’Turf Tartare or Tandoori Lamb Shoulder – finished off by a couple of canapés for dessert. Of course the showstopper is Mike’s live BBQ showcase with all sorts of fire-cooked meats and vegetables. And trust us, the man knows how to entertain as well as cook.

And let’s not forget about the wine either, after all, it’s the reason this is all taking place. You’ll get a trio of glasses throughout the evening, ranging from the award-winning Dark Horse Chardonnay, full of notes of apple and ripe stone fruit, layered with toasted oak, to the also award-winning Dark Horse Merlot with flavours of dark berries, and also award-winning, bold, sumptuously smooth and plummy Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon. And although the food menu is currently under wraps, rest assured it’s all been perfectly tailored to match them. One sip…

…and you’ll know you’ve backed the right horse.

NOTE: Taste The Unexpected With Dark Horse Wine And Mike Reid is taking place on the evening of Tuesday June 20th, from 6:30pm-9pm, in St Katharine Docks. Tickets are £30 including six courses (two starters, two mains, and two desserts) which you can book HERE.

DIRECTIONS: The easiest way to find the boat is to follow directions for “The Dickens Inn”, which you can find using this link to the Google maps location. The boat is located just behind this.
