When Cavita opened in 2022, it instantly became one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city.
And now it’s shaking things up, quite literally, with its subterranean cocktail bar, which has been christened El Bar De Cavita.
Accessible through its own separate entrance, the bar is a gorgeously rustic, dimly-lit mezcaleria whose brick walls are as rough as the drinks are smooth. If you’re dropping by on your own, there’s a bar stool for you where you can watch the ‘tenders in action. If you’re on a date, the room is filled with candlelit tables for two. And if you’re here with a big group ready to make a serious dent in the bar’s tequila supply, well, there are cosy little booths for you too.
With colourful Mexican decor dotted about, the place essentially revolves around chef/owner Adriana Cavita’s three favourite things: margaritas, mezcal and Mexican street food, which make up heart of the menus. And the way they’re presented here, it’s likely they’ll soon become some of your favourites, too.
El Bar De Cavita’s signature drink is their famed Watermelon Margarita, made with fresh fruit and a lime salt rim. But if watermelon doesn’t do it for you, you can also ask for Spicy, Hibiscus, Grilled Pineapple and classic Tommy’s variations.
Then there’s the uniquely vegetal Oaxacan sour with mezcal, fresh jalapeños and tomatillo juice, or the Corn Old Fashioned, which puts a twist on the classic with Abasolo Mexican Corn Whisky, agave and angostura bitters. And when you require a little ballast? The snacks are prepared with every bit the same love and care as the dishes upstairs in the restaurant, and a couple of vegan mooli ceviche tostadas, Baja fish tacos, and slow-cooked beef quesabirrias should keep you going…
…until you vow to return and try out the restaurant upstairs, as well.
