They say no-one’s above the Jin Bo Law…
…probably because it’s on the 14th floor of the Dorsett City Hotel in Aldgate.
And thanks to that supreme verticality, if you head out onto the terrace of this sleek City/East End cocktail spot, you can take in a view of The Gherkin, Tower Bridge, the Walkie Talkie, annnd The Shard all in one sweeping, cocktailey vista.
Inside, the view is still pretty great; everything from the chunky marble bar, to the dark-wood tables is pleasingly geometric, and the triangular shelves stocking the bar ingredients stretch right up across the ceiling to create a beautiful back-lit pineapple.
The cocktail menu is all Asian-inspired, including numbers like the Dragon Air, which is their take on a white Negroni – for their twist on it they’ve replaced the very Western gin with some very Eastern Baijiu (a Chinese spirit) giving it all strong flavours of pear and chocolate. Then there’s a Fizz from a Rose, a long drink that brings together kaffir lime, rose liquor, egg white and ginger beer; and the Butterfly Punch which is a traditional punch recipe which they’ve infused with some Jasmine tea.
And if you’re feeling peckish? They’ve got a pair of restaurants in the building to go with the drinks; the globally-inspired VQ (open 24hrs a day), and the Chinese Shikumen specialising in dim sum & Peking duck.
Which sounds worth taking a quack at.
