Move over coal, steam, and pigeons who accidentally fell into the furnace – Battersea Power Station has just started powering Londoners with something far more important: tacos.
It’s all thanks to renowned tortilla-smiths El Pastor. This is the fourth in the family of tequila-soaked taquerias from the Hart brothers, and you’ll find it perched overlooking the iconic building with a roomy, year-round riverside terrace.
Step inside, and you’ll find a spacious eatery dressed in El Pastor’s familiar lively rustic, street-style vibe. It’s all centred around a freestanding bar slapped right in the centre of the space, surrounded by seating, and finally overlooked by a huge 9-metre long vibrant mural that spans the entire back wall, all inspired by legendary Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
As usual, they’re making fresh corn tortillas in-house daily using heirloom Mexican corn, and then wrapping those tortillas around a menu of classic fillings like braised short rib; double-marinated sea bream; and the caramelised pineapple pork ‘al pastor’ that the restaurant it literally named after. But there’s some new stuff hitting the pass too, including a delectable-sounding ash buttered dry-aged rib-eye with roasted jalapeños & poblanos; as well as a new tuna tostada recipe featuring sashimi-grade yellowfin.
Here, for the first time, they’re also putting on brunch every weekend, featuring the likes of fluffy pancakes paired with crispy pastor, drizzled with chile de árbol agave syrup; a chorizo macha roll, which involves a lightly toasted brioche bun hugging smoky salsa, macha-glazed chorizo, and a fried egg; or a hearty Mexican twist on the Full English.
Finally, we come back to that bar, which is slinging all manner of mezcals, tequilas and agave spirits, as well as cocktails, Mexican beers, and wines too.
It’s powerful stuff.
