Sydney is a little less than 11,000 miles away from London.
It’s not exactly convenient.
But if you fancy a taste of the down under a little closer to home, you can find it in Notting Hill at Granger & Co. It was founded by one Bill Granger, a famous Australian restaurateur & food writer, who dropped out of Sydney art school in 1993 to open the first of his many restaurants which have become known for their legendary breakfasts.
One of four Granger & Co restaurants in London, Notting Hill really does capture the laid-back Aussie style by operating a walk-ins only policy. So just turn up and the team will look after you. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner all week, if you have to pick one, go for the morning feed first and start your day the right way. Just keep in mind that this place is a bona-fide brekkie haven, so unless you’re the earliest of kookaburras, expect to wait a little while for a table at weekends. It’s worth it though, trust us.
With bright yellow awnings, massive windows to let in the light, and smart-casual yellow rattan furniture, the restaurant does instantly lift your mood, even on the greyest of London days. Breakfast runs until midday, and there’s a plethora of unctuous, healthy plates on offer. There’s all sorts of teas and coffees, including several different matcha types, and definitely recommended are the freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and shakes. The miso caramel & vanilla shake is tough to beat, as is the raspberry and shiso smoothie.
If you think choosing just one drink will be hard, wait till you hear about the food. Firm favourites are the ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter; sweet corn fritters with roast tomato spinach and bacon; and the soba breakfast bowl with avocado and kimchi.
Yes there is Vegemite, and yes there’s shrimp. Is it done on the barbie? You’ll have to go along and find out.
