Salt beef is tasty, no matter which way you slice it.
Something that the people at Mercer & Co are keenly aware of, given that they make the stuff the centrepiece of their Islington deli.
It comes to you from the people behind the nearby Chapel Bar, and the place itself is a small-but-perfectly-formed cafe-style venue with upcycled furnishings and low-hung wicker lights. All of it, however, seems to revolve around the hot counter, from which you can get,
THE SALT BEEF
It’s all hand-carved, made in-house, and comes with mustard & pickles on bagel or rye. Of course, you can also get a Reuben with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, if you’re feeling frisky. If, for some reason, that doesn’t float your boat, there are also other sandwiches, toasties, and salads. And if you’re there in the evening, you can wash it all down with,
THE COCKTAILS
All made with “a method of cold brew infusion and glass ageing”, you’ll find numbers like the Merceretti (coffee-washed brandy, Amaretto, espresso, milk froth), and the Smokey Senorita (smoked tequila, triple sec, ginger syrup, lime juice, smoked seal salt, seaweed and Lapsang Souchong). Which sounds amazing…
…unless you’re cutting back.
NOTE: Mercer & Co is open all week from around 7.30-5.30pm. You can find out more on their instagram right HERE.
