Theo’s Pizzeria | Fantastic, No-Frills Pizza
At the weigh in, the credentials of Theo’s second restaurant are strong.
Already with one successful place under the belt, it’s headed up by an ex-Pizza East head chef, and adheres to the strict guidelines of Associazone Verace Pizza Napoletana which officially makes a pizza Neapolitan; using a sourdough starter from bakery The Dusty Knuckle in Dalston.
Theo’s mark 2 is situated in the concrete jungle that is Elephant and Castle. Considering the geography of the first outlet (in Camberwell) it reads like a statement that says “we represent the south east” in the heavyweight battle of London’s best pizza.
Theo’s Elephant & Castle pizzeria, in a very different space to the original branch, appears to be a clever homage to both an Italian café and the ‘70s-era estate it sits underneath. The fuss-free interior comes with square tables lined up through the middle, counter seating around the glass perimeter and a small wooden bar, just big enough to lean on.
The menu changes weekly and has quality ingredients at its heart. The tomatoes are San Marzano, the mozzarella is flown in from Naples and the ‘nduja is purchased from the other branch’s neighbour, The Camberwell Arms, who make it themselves. Expect classic combinations such as anchovy, olive, capers and oregano; and chestnut mushroom with mozzarella, gorgonzola, leek and basil.
A list of all Italian wines, cocktails and authentic Italian bitters everyone is too scared to touch, completes the experience.
NOTE: Theo’s is open from 12pm-10pm (11pm Fri & Sat). To make a booking (for 6+ people only) or to find out more, head to their website HERE.
