California Meets Japan, An Evening Of Wine And Food

You’re about to go on a very special wine-paired dinner.

In fact, it’s technically not even a dinner. It’s a more like a food-paired wine tasting.

Which is all the more impressive when you consider that the food is coming from Jason Atherton’s point-perfect Clerkenwell Japanese spot Sosharu. It’s all taking place at the end of this month, and it’s going to include some of California’s finest wines.

Now, there’s not much between California and Japan. Except the Pacific. When it comes to wine, however, the ocean between them is just as large. And much more metaphorical. So it’s California who’ll be supplying the drinks, while the chefs at Sosharu will provide the Japanese food to pair with them.

The tasting will be hosted by Californian wine expert and former Masterchef semi-finalist Jamie Patterson, who will take you and your fellow guests through each wine alongside the bespoke menu. So what can you expect? Well…

THE WINE

Everything kicks off with a glass of J Vineyards & Winery Cuvée 20 NV (from the Eden-like Russian River Valley in Sonoma) just to get everyone warmed up. After that, the food will begin, and you’ll be treated to full glasses of:

  • Orin Swift Blank Stare Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
  • J Vineyards & Winery Pinot Gris 2016, California
  • MacMurray Estate Vineyards Russian River Pinot Gris 2016, Russian River Valley, Sonoma
  • Talbott Vineyards Kali Hart Chardonnay 2016, Monterey
  • Edna Valley Chardonnay 2016, Edna Valley
  • Frei Brothers Chardonnay 2016, Russian River Valley

All of this will be soaked up by –

THE FOOD

Designed specifically to match the wines, the menu has been put together in collaboration with Sosharu’s head chef Alex Craciun, and will include dishes like bream sashimi with a myoga & shiso salad, and some crispy potato; tuna temaki with scallion tobiko, sushi rice, avocado, and fresh wasabi (which is rarer than you think); and some crispy chicken karaage with lemon salt & umami tomato.

All of which should pair nicely with a feeling of intense satisfaction.

NOTE: Please note this event has now sold out. California Meets Japan, An Evening Of Wine And Food takes place on 31st May 2018. Drinks are at 7pm with dinner starting at 7.30pm.
