Alfie’s is an effortlessly cool new jazz bar on Greek Street – the kind that you can miss even if you’re looking for it.
Unfortunately, when you do stumble upon it, you’ll quickly find out that it’s a members’ only joint. Fortunately, that membership will only set you back £35 for a year – granting you admission to every show, any night of the week, with a tasty 50% off the ticket price.
Alfie’s itself is actually named after a cat. The cat is named after a Michael Caine movie. And in that movie, Michael Caine plays a very cool cat called Alfie. It’s like a Russian doll of charisma. And the venue certainly lives up to the promise – just find the little doorway sandwiched neatly between Lina Stores and L’Escargot, flash a smile & a membership to the bouncer, and then make your way up the stairs.
Inside, it’s a brooding, low-lit mix of deep reds, sea greens, and moody blues, all tied together with exposed plaster & piping. It feels like the warm crackle of a vinyl record brought to life. There’s a cocktail bar & a leather-chair-filled seating area, all capped by a stage dominated by a grand piano. There are three shows on any given night (at 6pm, 8pm & 10:30pm), and you’ll get to see absolutely top-shelf acts like the James Browne Trio, Kitty LaRoar, and Rikette Genesis.
Hit the cocktail bar, and you can snag yourself everything from a simple Soho Negroni to a Cuban Crown (made with 11 year old rum, fresh lime, and salted honey syrup), and a vodka-laced Twinkle, with elderflower & lemon topped by a little prosecco.
Oh, and your membership will also get you access to the similarly excellent Piano Bar just a couple of streets over. And you’ll get 50% off the cost of any ticketed events, plus walk-in access for you and three guests, and priority booking on the biggest shows.
