Summer Piri Piri | Red Hot BBQ Pop-up From The Moro People
Things are heating up in Hackney Wick this summer.
Firstly, there’s the fact that it is summer.
But there’s also this very tidy pop-up restaurant in the offing…
Going by the name Summer Piri Piri and running Friday to Sunday until September, it comes to you from the folks behind Moro and Morito, sibling restaurants widely recognised as the places to go if you want a demonstration of world-class Iberian cooking in East London. This is their annual celebration of piri piri, the iconic Portuguese chilli, held at their Autumn Yard studio, which holds a serene terrace space overlooking the River Lea and The London Stadium.
Grilled over an open fire, there is – yes – piri piri chicken. There could not not be piri piri chicken. But there’s also red prawns grilled over charcoal, sardines grilled over charcoal, wood-roasted pork belly, cuttlefish, roasted potatoes with a herb salad & mayo, and Escalivada (the classic Catalan dish of roasted aubergine, pepper and tomato). You can support your main dishes with flatbreads and tortillas, and on the cooler side, there’s also tomato toast with jamon Iberico and padron peppers. Desserts feature on the menu too (chocolate mousse with toasted hazelnuts and yoghurt cake with Kent cherries), so there’s even potential for a three course meal…
You might feel like you’ve been invited to a private, informal barbecue by two of the best Spanish restaurants in London, because honestly, you kind of have. One thing to look out for though; if the food is out, it’s out, and there are no reservations. It’s all available on a first come, first served basis, so arrive as early as possible…
…or there won’t be any Moro to go around.
