Market Place Peckham | A casual street food hall
London is loving food halls right now, with Arcade and Market Halls all thriving.
Clearly, there’s a market for it.
And joining food hall mania is Market Place’s fourth site, now open in Peckham.
Market Place Peckham sits inside the Aylesham Centre and, in typical street food market fashion, features an array of cuisines from around the world. Stylistically, it sits very much in the family of other Market Place venues – there’s loads of greenery intermingled with exposed pipes overhead, long benches, hanging lights, and neon signage that variously advises you ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’, and to ‘Stop Thinking, Start Drinking’.
There are already plenty of great restaurants in Peckham, but for quick lunches and easy group hang-outs, all signs point to this being pretty popular. All in, there are ten traders competing for your attention, including KraPow, who are known for their Thai street food and their buttermilk Thai fried chicken sandwiches and spicy pumpkin fritters; Baba G’s, who are doing their Indian Bhangra burgers and spiced popcorn shrimp; and Huli Huli, who showcase Hawaii’s street food scene with the likes of ribs with grilled pineapple.
The trade-off for the er, traders, besides feeding diners, is that a platform here gives them a busy space and lots of opportunity, without having to fork out for their own place, which is financially unfeasible for small, local businesses. So it’s very possible that by visiting here, you’ll be able to tell your grandchildren that you went to one of the city’s most famous restaurants when it was but a mere market stall.
At the very least, you’ll have a good meal.
NOTE: Market Place Peckham is open now. There’s no need to book ahead, just turn up.
