In a city as heavily populated with rooftop bars as London, finding a terrace decked out with foliage, fairy lights and cocktails is not that surprising.
Finding it on top of a department store slap bang in the centre of town, however, is.
Yes, John Lewis has taken its uppermost level, um, up a level by sprucing it up with a couple of bars, a menu of sharing plates, and some stylish seating set amongst a forest of greenery (which explains where the ‘Willows’ part of the name comes from). There’s cosy tables for two; comfy sofas for bigger groups; picnic tables; and three private huts (heated in winter) that you can privately book for you and up to eight friends.
There’s a couple of bars up here slinging seasonal drinks, courtesy of the Night Tales team. They include a couple of beers on draught, a few wines available by the glass, and some decent signature cocktails like the Rum on the Roof, which mingles two types of rum with banana liqueur and passionfruit syrup. And because serving cocktails with two types of rum would be inadvisable without serving food as well, you’ll also find a menu of dishes designed to share, like sticky burnt ends with guindilla chilli; sweet potato fritters with coconut & lime leaf dip; and a selection of Cobble Lane charcuterie, all cured up in N1.
Your move, House of Fraser.
NOTE: Willows On The Roof is open daily, 12-10pm (9pm Sun). You can check out their website, and make a booking right HERE.
