The Chai Guys have brewed up something rather special: a bakery.
And not just any bakery. A gloriously inventive, spice-laden haven of exotic & interesting bread, buns, sandwiches, pastries, and treats (as well as the usual lineup of chai goodness they’re famous for).
You’ll find the space itself in Notting Hill, slap-bang on Portobello Road, where it sits hugging the Electric Cinema. The space is considerably larger than their two sister sites, in Spitalfields & Covent Garden, which just specialise in chai. Here, the place is dominated by shelves and shelves of baked goods.
To fill out the menu, they’ve taken spices from the Indian subcontinent, baking techniques from Japan, and classic recipes from France & Scandinavia. Thus they have the likes of cardamom-infused chai spice milk bread, as well as dhoklas (a fluffy, savoury sponge cake with green chilli & coriander chutney), fragrant, showstopper cardamom buns, as well as a number of savoury danish pastries, one of which is filled with spicy tomato and miso aubergine.
The menu will change with the seasons, with new dishes and ingredients being added all the time, but they’ll always be pouring their chai too, naturally. If you’ve never had it, you’re in for a treat – they’ve got masala chai infused with the gentle burn of fresh ginger, an aromatic Kadak chai with cinnamon, and a beautifully floral Kesar chai with rose petals & saffron.
And if you were wondering if there’s anything negative about the place? There is: the flour is all carbon negative.
So you can’t say that these guys don’t chai.
